Physical Science - Week of Jan. 30th

GRADE 9 - Lesson Title: Carbon Chemistry/Nuclear Chemistry

Chapter/Lessons: Chapter 9 and Chapter 10: Carbon Chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry

    Learning Objectives

    1. Chapter 9 - Carbon Chemistry (Class discussions through vocabulary)
      1. Relate the structures of three forms of carbon to their properties; Explain why there are millions of different organic compounds; Distinguish unsaturated from saturated hydrocarbons; Classify hydrocarbons using structural formulas and names; Describe formation and uses of fossil fuels; Classify substituted hydrocarbons based on their functional groups; Describe some properties and reactions of the five types of substituted hydrocarbons; Distinguish a monomer from a polymer; Compare three examples of synthetic polymers; Describe the structure and functions of natural polymers; Compare photosynthesis and respiration.
    2. Chapter 10 - Nuclear Chemistry (Class discussions through vocabulary)
      1. Describe the process of nuclear decay; Classify nuclear radiation as alpha particles, beta particles, or gamma rays; Balance nuclear equations; Identify sources of nuclear radiation; Define half-life; Compare and contrast nuclear reactions; Describe radioisotopes; Describe transmutation; Compare and contrast nuclear forces; Describe nuclear fission and nuclear fusion.

Learning Tasks -Vocabulary for all chapter words; key note lectures/slides

    1. Students will define all vocabulary words in each chapter for classroom discussions. Students will take vocabulary exams on both chapters.
    2. Classroom discussions and drawing hydrocarbon models to address the appropriate GLE’s: Physical Science GLE from Chapter 9 Carbon Chemistry-Diagram or construct models of simple hydrocarbons (four or fewer carbons) with single, double, or triple bonds (PS-H-C6) Physical Science GLE from Chapter 10 Nuclear Chemistry -Evaluate the uses and effects of radioactivity in people's daily lives (PS-H-B2) -Compare nuclear fission to nuclear fusion (PS-H-B2).

    Evaluation/Assessment

    1. Vocabulary Test Wednesday on Chapter 9 words.
    2. Vocabulary Test Monday, February 6th for Chapter 10 words.
