First Grade News

Happy New Year! We have so much planned for this 3rd nine weeks. We are starting the year subtracting 2-digit numbers and regrouping in math. So far, we are off to a great start! In language we will be learning all about nouns, adjectives, verbs, and of course we will continue to write paragraphs. We are finishing up our unit on electricity in science and will soon be measuring everything - length, volume, temperature, and weight! Get ready for lots of hands on activities! In spelling we are working our way up to 20 words a week, so this means extra practice might be needed. Please practice all spelling words with your child everyday. Make sure he is able to spell AND read each word. We are looking forward to a fun filled last half of first grade! Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Upcoming Events

We are keeping busy this holiday season in first grade!! Not only are we adding two-digit numbers and regrouping, we will begin writing our first paragraphs, learn about matter, and discover Egypt. Besides all the hard work the students are doing in the classroom, we plan to have a little fun too. On Friday November 18th, we will be visiting the residents at The Bailey House in Bunkie. After the Thanksgiving holidays, we have a trip planned to see the play "Pinocchio" on November 29th in Alexandria, as well as the "Nutcracker" on December 9th in Hammond.
Please continue to read with your child every night. We are still having students whose red mailbox folders are not signed daily. Also, just to remind you, we have weekly spelling tests on Friday. It is important that you review these words on a daily basis. Be sure that your child can read them, as well as, understand how to use them in sentences.

Upcoming APCS Events

Open House
Great news! We are having an open house on October 24th from 5:00-6:30. Please come out an see all the exciting things your child is learning in first grade this year. Hot dog meals and sweet treats will be available. I am really proud of the work they are doing! Keep it up first graders!

Fall Festival
The APCS annual Fall Festival is set for November 5th! We will have the novelties shop, a game, and a petting zoo. All parents will be required to work to get their volunteer hours. A note will be going home soon. We will also be selling raffles on a LSU basket. Check your child's mailbox folder for all the important details.

Parents,
Please check your child's red mailbox folder daily. It is important for you to go over all homework and read with your child also.
** With winter almost here we are in need of antibacterial wipes such as Lysol and Clorox wipes.
