On the downhill path....

Parents,
Many of you have been contacting me concerning the last weeks of school. Although ILEAP testing is complete, school is going on as usual. We are currently studying Civil War and reading the novel Miss Jane Pittman. So far, it seems as though the children are really enjoying both!!! It is my goal to show them that school can be fun and interesting, even after state testing! Please know that attendance is just as important as ever, and that we will be continuing to have weekly tests.

Thanks,
Brandi Lee

An important note ---- we will be taking the IOWA post test on May 1,2, and 3rd. Please make sure you explain to your child that this test is an important tool for determining their growth this year.

Easter Break!

Parents,

This is just a reminder of a couple of things dealing with Spring Break....

First, we return to school on Monday, April 9th. ILEAP testing begins that Thursday (the 12th) and continues until the 17th.
Over Easter break, if you could work with your children on the history packet given to them as well as the math practice tests, this would benefit their scores immensely! The students can also visit louisianapass.org to practice ANY of the subjects for 5th grade....(just create a guest login to do so).
The students have been working really hard over the last couple of months, and I would love to see that pay off for them in AWESOME scores! I know they are tired, but hard work always has great results!!!!

Have a wonderful Easter and enjoy the break!
Mrs. Brandi

Need extra help????

If you are looking for a way to make extra points in certain subject while practicing for the ILEAP, you need to visit the Louisiana Pass website! Go to louisianapass.org and make yourself an account. Once there, you can take quizzes in all the subjects that will count as bonus points!!!!! Print out the results and bring them to the teacher of the subject!

Please take advantage of this opportunity the ENTIRE month of March!!!

ILEAP practice

Parents,
As you all know, ILEAP is nearing! We have started practicing and reviewing for the test in all subjects, and it is VERY important that your children do not miss unnecessary days of school. We do realize that things come up, however we urge you to keep in contact with Mrs Lindsay and I about any school that will be missed in the next month or so.
With that said, please make sure that your child is doing their part in this next month of ILEAP practice by staying on top of their planners and making sure they are completing their homework! This homework is directly correlated to the ILEAP and will help their scores.... ;-)

Thanks for your continued support -
Brandi

History project

Parents,

The third nine weeks project sheet has gone home today. Timelines are usually a pretty easy skill to master, so I have decided to see what each child will design when asked to make a timeline of a few events that we study.

I have attached a copy on this blog entry, just in case your child misplaces it! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or email me ASAP! I look forward to seeing how creative your children will be with these timelines.

Mrs Brandi

Please note --- this project is due on MARCH 16th!!!!

Important upcoming dates/tests

Parents,
I just wanted to touch base with you about one of the changes that we are taking as we get closer to ILEAP. The first change is our spelling/vocabulary list. Our new list are directly from the Louisiana ILEAP practice plan. Please note that these words are extremely important and MAY show up on the math, history, ELA, or science portions of the ILEAP. Your child will need to know how to use these words as well as apply them if asked. We will be discussing these words together in class.

Also, there is no school on Friday, February 10th due to staff development.

A new book order went home today and is due on Friday, 17th.

Thanks!

Field Trip - Feb. 3rd

As you all know, we have planned a field trip to the Caughlin Saunders Performing Arts building on Friday, Feb. 3rd to see School House Rick Live. We will be eating lunch at the Alexandria Mall Food Court before the performance. Please send your child with at least $7.00 Friday to cover the cost of their lunch. There is NO NEED to change your normal mode of transportation to or from school that day... we will be back in time for buses. If you have any questions, please call me or Mrs Lindsay!

Thanks!

Report cards

Parents, A note went home today regarding 2nd nine week report cards. We will be sending home report cards with the students tomorrow if we see that a parent conference is not needed. For the parents that we have contacted, please keep your appointment time, since we have several parents to meet with and not a whole lot of time to do so. We will be at school from 3:30 - 8:00 p.m. to better suit your schedule. If you have already spoken to us and an appt. time cannot be kept, please call Mrs Lindsay or I first thing in the morning -- 318-240-8285.

Toys for Tots

Download file "toys for tots.pages"

This year the 5th grade will be sponsoring the US Marines Toys for Tots gift drive. To raise money, we will be having a hot cocoa booth at Book Night (December 5th). A letter is coming home with all the details!
Also, we will be accepting donations in the form of cash or an unopened, unwrapped toy. I have spoken to the students about maybe doing some extra chores around the house to earn money for out project, and they seemed eager! The point of this service project is not only to help out needy families, but try and teach our children just how blessed we are!
Let me know if there is something that you need further explanation about!

Wishing you an early Happy Holidays....
Mrs Brandi Lee
